(Andropogon gerardii)

Big bluestem, tall bluestem, or turkey foot.

A lovely, color-shifting, US-native bunch grass, whose natural range extends from the East Coast into the eastern portion of the western States. The original seed source for the plants we grow is a native population in the southwestern tip of Utah.

The new spring blades emerge green-blue and start to turn coppery tones and then into purple and blue tones with the beginning of cooler temperatures in the fall. The white fuzz on the seed heads catches the light and contrasts beautifully with the fall colors of the rest of the plant. Big bluestem is a warm-season grass that can grow 4 to 6 feet tall in clumps spreading 2 to 3 feet wide. Warm-season grasses are dormant during cold seasons and begin active growth with the return of warmer temperatures.

This highly ornamental native grass makes a great addition to meadow plantings, wildlife plantings, and many styles of landscapes. The grass clumps provide excellent shelter throughout the year for beneficial insects, birds appreciate the seeds in fall and winter, and this grass is an excellent forage for livestock and wildlife.

Big bluestem is an adaptable grass that can live in dry to wet conditions. Drought tolerance will improve as the plant establishes a deep, strong root system. Continue regular watering for the first 1 to 2 years before decreasing irrigation.

Plant in full to part sun, and avoid excessive fertilizing which can cause weak growth and attract pests. Light compost application twice a year or less would be more than sufficient.

Big bluestem is an easy grass to maintain. You can shear back the previous year’s growth in the late spring to clear the way for new growth as warmer conditions return. Beneficial insects and pollinators benefit from leaving the stems up until warm conditions to allow them a safe place to overwinter.

Transplant or direct sow after danger of frost. We’ve had the best success by transplanting seeds that were started on a heat mat.
