Crystalline ice plant is the disco ball of the plant world. The leaves, stems, and flower buds are covered in sparkly epidermal bladder cells filled with salt water that sparkle in sunlight. Legend has it, this plant is the source of Elton John’s power, and the inspiration for the majority of his fabulous looks.

We start our seeds indoors and transplant after danger of frost has passed. They prefer well drained soils, and can thrive in disturbed areas or poor soil. You can also direct sow the seeds by lightly racking them into the soil surface in mid-to-late spring.
