(Verbena hastata)

This perennial wildflower is common in fens across the United States and Canada. It prefers full sun to part shade, and doesn’t require well-drained soils. The purple flower spikes start blooming at their base, and move upwards in concentric circles. From a distance the flowers look like a purple mist. Great for mid-summer pollinators.

Seeds prefer a 30 day period of moist cold stratification to break their natural dormancy, followed by warmer temperatures (60-70ºF) and are light dependent . If you direct sow the seeds from autumn to very early spring by lightly raking the seeds into soil, they will germinate when temperatures rise in mid to late spring.
