Also known as Chinese chives or Chinese leek, this native of Southwestern China is a great perennial addition to herb gardens. Once established, they are low maintenance and highly productive. As the name suggests, the leaves have a garlicky flavor opposed to the more onion-like flavor of common chives (Allium schoenoprasum). The gorgeous edible flowers make this a great ornamental plant as well. Plant indoors a few weeks before the last frost, or outdoors after danger of frost has passed.
